Many people mistakenly think that diabetics must eat special "diabetic foods." This isn't true. Diabetics can eat the same things that everyone else eats -- including sweets. The difference is that they must make sure that they are eating a healthy diet, getting enough exercise, and, of course, managing their weight. In fact, the only time that a diabetic can't eat the same foods that other people eat is when they are trying to lose weight. In this case, they are advised to cut out all sugar -- again, just like anyone else who needs to lose weight. Diabetics who have their weight under control, however, only need to monitor their blood sugar levels and track what they eat, to determine how the foods that they eat affect their blood sugar levels. That said, diabetics can enjoy the same restaurants that other people enjoy. Many restaurants now offer heart-healthy menus, and this is something that everyone should consider -- not just diabetics. Restaurants are offering healthier foods these days -- because the public demands them. Even fast-food restaurants have healthy choices on the menu, such as really great salads that you don't have to feel guilty about eating. As the dessert cart rolls by, as a diabetic, you don't have to suffer and watch everyone else in the restaurant enjoy those fabulous desserts. Stop the waiter pushing the cart, and choose the dessert that you want. The key is to have some of it, and not all of it. You know your body, and hopefully, you have monitored your blood sugar and you know what effect certain foods have on your blood sugar levels. All you have to do is to keep this in mind, and choose healthy foods from the menu. Enjoy your favorite restaurants often!
