When you burn out, you just have nothing left to give the practice and it becomes impossible to go out and even go for a short run. Most people don't work in enough rest or plan to take enough rest when they are first starting out running. Most people get very excited, and they figure out their training schedule, they figure out exactly when they are going to go out and run and how far they are going to go, they figure out how quickly they want to progress and when they want to start competing. These are all good things to take into consideration, but the best plans in the world will fall apart if they don't incorporate enough structured time for rest. Why is rest so important? For starters, it's only during rest periods that you are going to be able to recover from all the running you have been doing. You don't recover and heal and get stronger from your exercise while you are exercising, you do all that when you aren't doing much of anything. When you create plenty of structured rest periods into your workout, you're really going to be creating the time and space away from working out to recover. Running is a high impact sport. It takes its toll on your body, and it also takes its toll on your sense of determination and your passion. While running provides a lot of benefits, it isn't always easy. The mental and emotional fatigue that comes with running is something that needs to be accounted for as much as the physical toll, and these reserves will be built back up during your rest periods as well. Think about it, when are you most excited to go for a run? When do you anticipate it the most? Is it when you are on the third day in a row of pushing yourself, or is it when you have taken a day or two off to recover? When you take the time off for rest, you will not only physically feel fresh and ready to get out there, but you will feel that mental and emotional hunger to go out for a run. And staying fresh and hungry is the only way you will stick with the practice for the long term. Getting started running is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
